Amazon DSP advertising that builds demand beyond the search bar
Programmatic display and video that reaches shoppers on and off Amazon, retargeting browsers, growing new-to-brand, and feeding your Sponsored Ads with warm demand.
What Amazon DSP advertising is
Amazon DSP (demand-side platform) is Amazon's system for buying display, video, audio and streaming TV ads programmatically. It targets audiences built from Amazon's first-party shopping data and serves ads on Amazon, on Amazon-owned properties such as Fire TV and Prime Video, and across third-party websites and apps. Targeting works by audience instead of by keyword.
Sponsored Ads capture shoppers who are already searching. Brands that keep growing eventually run short of profitable search demand, and DSP lets them reach people earlier: shoppers who browsed the category, bought from a competitor, or viewed your product and left. As an Amazon DSP agency, we run it alongside your Sponsored Ads and measure every campaign in Amazon Marketing Cloud (AMC). For a longer primer, read Amazon DSP explained.
Is your brand ready for Amazon DSP?
DSP pays back when there is demand worth amplifying. Before we recommend it, we check four things:
- The products you would promote already sell, and have enough reviews to convince a shopper who has never heard of your brand.
- Sponsored Ads already work. DSP suits brands spending about $10k a month or more on Sponsored Ads with healthy conversion, because DSP builds demand and search campaigns turn it into orders.
- Shoppers have a reason to come back: a product people reorder, a higher-priced item with a long consideration window, or a catalog customers buy into piece by piece. These get the most from retargeting and audience work.
- There is budget for a real test.
If something on this list is missing, we'll say so and sequence the work, usually fixing search campaigns and listings first so you don't pay for reach you can't convert. Our Amazon DSP guide covers when DSP is premature in more detail.
Inventory and audiences we use
Display
Banner and native ads on Amazon, Amazon-owned sites and third-party websites and apps, aimed at audiences built from shopping signals.
Online video
Video ads on and off Amazon for products that need a demonstration before someone buys.
Streaming TV
Ads on Prime Video, Fire TV and other streaming inventory, bought with the same audiences as display and measured against Amazon sales.
Audio
Ads in Amazon Music's ad-supported tier and on Alexa devices, for brands that want reach beyond the screen.
Retargeting
Win back shoppers who viewed your product, added it to cart, or bought once and haven't reordered.
Lookalike and in-market audiences
Reach shoppers whose behavior matches your best customers, or who are browsing your category right now.
Competitor conquesting
Reach shoppers who viewed or bought competing products, with a clear reason to compare yours.
AMC audiences
Custom audiences built in Amazon Marketing Cloud, such as lapsed buyers or shoppers who bought a product that often leads to yours.
Agency, Amazon managed service or self-service
There are three ways to buy Amazon DSP.
| Agency | Amazon managed service | Self-service | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | A specialist team, planned together with your Sponsored Ads | Amazon's own ad team | Your team, with direct access to the DSP console |
| Entry point | Discussed on the discovery call | A high minimum spend set by Amazon | No managed-service minimum; the cost is staff time and training |
| Link to Sponsored Ads | One plan and one budget for search and DSP | Runs separately from your Sponsored Ads | Up to your team |
| Reporting | Weekly summary with your Sponsored Ads, plus AMC analysis | Amazon's reports | Whatever your team builds |
| Best for | Brands that want DSP and search planned together | Large advertisers that can commit a big budget | Brands with an in-house programmatic specialist |
Self-service makes sense when you already employ someone who can build audiences, manage creative and read AMC. If you don't, an agency gets you the same access without the hire. For how the two ad systems differ, see Amazon DSP vs Sponsored Ads.

Measuring DSP with Amazon Marketing Cloud
Last-click reports undercount DSP, because most of its work happens before the search that ends in a sale. We measure it in Amazon Marketing Cloud, Amazon's clean-room analytics service, where DSP and Sponsored Ads events can be joined at the shopper level without exposing personal data.
What we look at:
- New-to-brand customers: how many buyers exposed to DSP had not bought from your brand in the past 12 months, and what each one cost.
- View-through conversions: purchases by shoppers who saw an ad without clicking it, compared with a similar group that didn't see it.
- Path to purchase: which sequence of DSP and search touchpoints most often ends in an order, so budget follows the paths that convert.
- Halo on search: whether branded searches and Sponsored Ads conversion rise while DSP is live.
These numbers decide whether we scale an audience or cut it. More on the tool in Amazon Marketing Cloud explained, and on audience options in Amazon DSP audiences and targeting.

How DSP management is priced
DSP is priced like the rest of our work: a fixed monthly base plus a small percentage of ad sales, so what we earn follows your results. Media spend is billed separately from our fee.
Before launch we agree what DSP is for in your account (new-to-brand growth, retargeting return or reach into a new audience) and report on it in the same weekly summary as your Sponsored Ads. DSP works best next to a healthy search program. If yours isn't there yet, we'll fix that first, and our Amazon PPC management page explains how. To see where your account stands, start with a growth plan.
Amazon DSP FAQ
Amazon DSP (demand-side platform) is Amazon's programmatic advertising system for buying display, video, and streaming TV ads on and off Amazon, targeted with Amazon's first-party shopping data. It reaches shoppers beyond the search results, across the funnel.
Sponsored Ads are keyword-driven and mostly capture demand that already exists in search. DSP is audience-driven: it reaches shoppers on and off Amazon before they search and brings back those who viewed or bought before. The two work best together. Full comparison: Amazon DSP vs Sponsored Ads.
Yes. DSP suits brands ready to invest in the upper funnel, generally those already spending $10k+/month on Sponsored Ads with healthy conversion. We confirm fit on your discovery call before you commit any budget.
Beyond standard reach and conversion metrics, we use Amazon Marketing Cloud (AMC) to measure incrementality, new-to-brand growth, and the halo effect DSP has on your search campaigns. That shows the contribution last-click reports miss.
Our fee is a fixed monthly base plus a small percentage of ad sales, billed separately from the media you buy. Exact numbers depend on your account size and goals, and we share them on your discovery call.
We can, but DSP performs best when coordinated with a healthy search program. If your Sponsored Ads need work first, we will be honest about sequencing so you do not pay for reach you cannot convert.
Self-service gives your own team access to the DSP console. It makes sense if someone on staff can build audiences, manage creative and read AMC. Managed means a team runs DSP for you: either Amazon's managed service, which has a high minimum spend, or an agency like us that plans DSP together with your Sponsored Ads.
Retargeting is the first to show sales, since it reaches shoppers who already know the product. The first 30 days go to setup, baseline metrics and the first campaigns. A reliable read on prospecting and new-to-brand campaigns comes in the second and third months, once AMC has enough data to compare shoppers who saw the ads with those who didn't.
