What ACoS tells you

ACoS (advertising cost of sales) is your ad spend divided by the sales those ads brought in, shown as a percentage. Spend $250 to generate $1,000 in ad sales and your ACoS is 25%.

ROAS is the same ratio turned upside down: a 25% ACoS is a ROAS of 4. Neither number says whether you made money. For that you need your break-even ACoS.

Break-even ACoS: the number to compare against

Break-even ACoS is your profit margin before advertising: selling price minus product cost and Amazon fees, divided by the price. A $30 product that costs $7.50 to make and $9.40 in fees has $13.10 left, so its break-even ACoS is about 43.7%.

Below that line, ad sales add profit. Above it, you pay to sell. Running above break-even can be a deliberate choice during a launch, when you are buying rank and reviews, but a mature product that stays there loses money on every ad sale.

Why TACoS matters as well

TACoS divides ad spend by total sales, ads and organic together. It shows what advertising costs the whole business, which ACoS cannot.

Watch the trend. If ad sales grow and TACoS falls, your ads are lifting organic rank and the account is getting healthier. If TACoS climbs month after month, revenue depends more and more on paid traffic.

When the numbers don't add up

An ACoS above break-even usually traces back to broad targeting that pays for irrelevant searches, bids set without reference to margin, or a listing that converts the click poorly.

Our team manages Amazon PPC around these numbers for brands doing $500k–$30M a year. If yours look wrong and you can't see why, we can go through the account with you.
