Naming the four things you also need before the floor arrives

Order value $640 → $1,010

A flooring brand sold the planks and stayed silent about the underlayment, moisture barrier, transition strips and expansion gap. Customers discovered them on installation day, and said so in reviews.

The challenge

Flooring is never a single purchase. Between the planks and a finished room sit underlayment, a moisture barrier over concrete, transition strips at every doorway and a trim profile at the walls — and a first-time installer learns this on the Saturday morning the boxes are opened.

The brand sold all four accessories and mentioned none of them on the plank listing. So the customer bought the floor, hit the gap, drove to a store for the rest, and left a review about a company that “doesn't tell you what you need”. The brand was simultaneously losing the accessory revenue and being punished for not selling it.

Our approach

We put the whole job on the page.

  • A prerequisites block in the image stack: the four items, what each is for, and when it's optional.
  • Subfloor-conditional guidance — concrete versus wood changes two of the four, which is exactly where most confusion lives.
  • The brand's own accessories cross-referenced from the plank listing, so the discovery happens before checkout rather than during installation.
  • Coverage for the prerequisite searches themselves, since “underlayment for vinyl plank” is a query the brand had never appeared in.

The results

Average order value grew from $640 to $1,010 — the customer now buys the job, not the planks.

Reviews complaining about a missing item fell from 28% to 7% and the rating recovered half a star, because the disappointment was never about the product. Total revenue rose 58% with no increase in advertising: the additional revenue comes from items the brand already stocked and had simply never put in front of the person who needed them.

“Every angry review was about something we sell and never mentioned.”
