Selling a regulated product in fifty different legal markets

Suppressed ASIN-days down 96%

A pest control brand kept losing listings to state registration rules it discovered only after a takedown. Mapping the catalog against state-level restrictions ended the suppressions and opened states it had abandoned.

The challenge

Pesticide products are registered state by state, label claims are regulated, and Amazon enforces both — usually by suppressing a listing without warning. The brand had learned this the painful way: a product would sell well for four months and disappear on a Tuesday, sometimes over a registration it lacked in one state, sometimes over a phrase in the bullets.

The brand's response had been defensive and expensive. It blocked shipping to eleven states rather than work out which of its products were actually restricted there, and it wrote deliberately vague copy to avoid claim violations, which also made the listings impossible to find. Meanwhile each suppression destroyed the ranking the product had built, so the catalog never accumulated any momentum — 268 ASIN-days of suppression per quarter is a listing being restarted over and over.

Our approach

We replaced guesswork with a compliance map the catalog is built from.

  • A SKU-by-state registration matrix, checked against each state's registration records rather than assumed from the strictest one.
  • Claim language rebuilt per product to what its registered label actually supports, replacing both the violating phrases and the vague ones that were hiding the product from search.
  • State restrictions handled at the listing level instead of by blanket shipping blocks, so a product legal in a state is sold there.
  • A pre-publication review step, so a new product's compliance status is settled before it is listed rather than discovered by a takedown.

Inside the ad account

Anonymized account view, rebuilt from the figures reported above: ad sales growing from $91k to $175k a month while ACoS falls from 34% to 22% across the 14-month engagement.

The results

Suppressed ASIN-days fell from 268 a quarter to 11, and eleven previously blocked states came back into the catalog.

Revenue grew 92%, and the hero term moved from #23 to #4 — not through any new tactic, but because a listing that stays live for four uninterrupted quarters accumulates the ranking that a listing suppressed every quarter never can. The copy rewrite contributed on both sides: the compliant language is also concrete, searchable language, where the defensive vagueness had been costing rankings to prevent violations it was not actually preventing.

“We had been treating compliance as the thing that stops us selling. It turned out to be the thing that lets a listing stay up long enough to rank.”
