When the search term is a code, not a sentence
Revenue $132k → $310k
Fastener buyers do not search for “stainless bolts”. They search for the designation written on the drawing in front of them, and the brand's listings contained words instead of codes.

The challenge
A fastener is not chosen, it is specified. The person buying has a drawing, a maintenance record or the old part in their hand, and what they have is a string: a thread size, a pitch, a standard number, a material grade. They type that string into the search box more or less verbatim, because it is the only unambiguous way to describe the thing they need.
The brand's 480 listings were written in descriptive language — “heavy duty stainless steel hex bolt, corrosion resistant” — which matches no search anyone in this category performs. It ranked for broad descriptive terms that are contested, expensive and full of shoppers who do not know what they need, and was invisible for the precise strings that carry almost no competition and convert at multiples of the category rate.
Our approach
We rebuilt the catalog's vocabulary around how the product is specified.
- Every SKU mapped to its full designation — thread, pitch, length, standard and material grade, in the notations used in both target markets.
- Designations placed where they index — the title's opening characters, the structured attributes and the backend fields, not buried in a bullet.
- Notation variants covered, since the same fastener is written several legitimate ways and each is a real search.
- Exact-match campaigns on designation strings, where competition is minimal and the shopper arrives already certain.
Inside the ad account

Anonymized account view, rebuilt from the figures reported above: ad sales growing from $59k to $140k a month while ACoS falls from 34% to 20% across the 5-month engagement.
The results
Revenue rose 135% to $310k a month in five months, the fastest result in this group of engagements, on sessions up 85%.
Blended cost per click halved, because designation searches are uncontested compared with the descriptive head terms the brand had been buying — and paid volume was deliberately cut back as those head terms were dropped, which is why revenue grew faster than traffic. Conversion rose 27% for the plainest of reasons: someone who searched a full designation and found an exact match has nothing left to decide.
“Years of better adjectives. The customer types a thread size and a standard number.”
