Shoppers buying accessories do not search for the accessory — they search for the machine they own. A year of search term reports held thousands of model numbers the catalog had never answered.

The challenge

The brand made sleeves, stands, hubs and cooling pads, and its listings described sleeves, stands, hubs and cooling pads. The people buying them were describing something else entirely: the exact machine sitting on their desk, typed as a model string with a dash and four digits in it.

Those searches were already landing in the account — the automatic campaigns had been quietly buying them for a year, converting well, and then the reports were filed and forgotten. Nothing in the catalog acknowledged a single model name, so the only way a shopper with a specific machine could find the right product was to pay for it through an ad. Organic traffic came from generic head terms where the brand competed against fifty near-identical listings and lost most of the time.

Our approach

The account already knew what people typed. We built the catalog around it.

  • Twelve months of search term data mined for model strings, ranked by converting orders rather than by impressions.
  • A compatibility statement per listing — the specific machines each SKU actually fits, verified against dimensions rather than guessed from a spec sheet.
  • Compatibility declared where the catalog provides for it — the structured compatibility fields and a plain “fits” statement in the copy, rather than thousands of other manufacturers' model strings dumped into the search-term field, which is both against the rules and largely ignored.
  • Exact-match campaigns on the converting model strings, harvested monthly, with the losing ones negated out of the automatic campaigns they came from.

Inside the ad account

Anonymized account view, rebuilt from the figures reported above: ad sales growing from $119k to $194k a month while ACoS falls from 34% to 21% across the 6-month engagement.

Anonymized account view, rebuilt from the figures reported above: ad sales growing from $119k to $194k a month while ACoS falls from 34% to 21% across the 6-month engagement.

The results

Organic sales nearly doubled, from $149k to $292k a month, and the share of revenue the brand had to buy through advertising fell with it.

The mechanism is unglamorous: searches that were converting at a cost now convert for free, because the listing finally contains the words the shopper used. Blended cost per click dropped 40% as spend shifted out of the crowded head terms and into model strings almost nobody else bids on. No new products were launched during the engagement.
