Ending the adapter returns: a compatibility answer before the order

Fit-check returns 22% → 7%

One stroller order in five came back, and almost all of them were the same failure: the car seat the parent already owned would not click in. The product was fine; the page was silent.

The challenge

Travel systems are bought in the wrong order. Most parents already own a car seat — it was gifted, or it came first because the hospital will not discharge without one — and the stroller is chosen afterwards, on the assumption that the two will connect.

Often they do not without a specific adapter, and the brand's listing said nothing about which. Twenty-two percent of orders came back, four fifths of them for that reason, and each return took a one-star review with it: a parent who has assembled a stroller in a hallway at nine in the evening and discovered their car seat will not seat does not blame their own research. The brand was being rated on a compatibility question it had chosen not to answer, and the adapter — which it manufactured — was selling to 8% of buyers.

Our approach

We answered the question on the page, before the money moved.

  • A full compatibility matrix in A+, naming every major car seat brand and model and stating fits, fits with adapter, or does not fit.
  • The adapter surfaced at the decision point rather than buried as an accessory two clicks away.
  • The click-in shown in the image stack, including what the required adapter looks like installed.
  • Return reasons monitored per model pairing, so any combination still failing gets its matrix entry corrected within the month.

Inside the ad account

Anonymized account view, rebuilt from the figures reported above: ad sales rising as compatibility content stopped wasting clicks.

The results

Returns fell from 22% to 7% and net revenue grew 56% — a large part of it simply from orders that stopped coming back.

The hero ASIN's rating recovered half a point, from 3.6 to 4.1, because the reviews that had been punishing the product for an unanswered question largely stopped appearing. Adapter attach rate went from 8% to 44%, which is the same mechanism read from the other side: the parents who needed one had always needed one, and now they buy it in the same order instead of returning the stroller.

“We were being reviewed on a question we'd decided was too complicated to put on the page.”
