Building demand when you are not allowed to say the words

Sessions +32%

A licensed figure line could not use the character names it was searched by, and kept having ads rejected and listings flagged for trying. We built the visibility on the terms it does own.

The challenge

The brand holds a license to manufacture, not a free hand to advertise. Its figures are searched for by character and franchise names owned by the licensor, and every time the team put those terms in a title, a backend field or a campaign, something broke: ads were rejected, listings were flagged by brand-registry complaints, and twice a hero ASIN was suppressed for several days.

The team's response had been to keep trying, a little more quietly each time, which produced fourteen enforcement events in a year and a permanent air of risk over the account. Meanwhile the traffic those terms would have brought was going to resellers who had no license to protect and nothing to lose.

Our approach

We stopped fighting for words the brand cannot own and built a search surface it can.

  • A compliance line drawn explicitly with the licensor — what may appear in a title, what may appear nowhere, in writing rather than by trial and error.
  • Descriptive and attribute-led keywords — scale, articulation, material, collector or play grade, display-piece phrasings — a vocabulary nobody owns.
  • Visual recognition doing the work the words cannot — the image stack makes the product instantly identifiable without a single restricted term.
  • Advertising aimed at adjacency — Sponsored Display on complementary, non-restricted products and categories the same collector buys.

Inside the ad account

Anonymized account view, rebuilt from the figures reported above: ad sales growing from $99k to $150k a month while ACoS falls from 33% to 22% across the 9-month engagement.

The results

Sessions went from 78k to 103k a month and revenue rose 51%, while enforcement events went to zero.

The descriptive vocabulary turned out to be a better business than the restricted one: it is far less contested, so ACoS fell eleven points, and the shopper who searches by scale and articulation is the collector who buys repeatedly rather than the parent buying one thing by name. Nine uninterrupted months also let ranking accumulate, which the old suspension cycle had made impossible.

“Every few months we'd sneak the character name back into a bullet, get flagged and lose a week. Deciding we would never do it again was the actual strategy.”
