A plush launch that had reviews before it had traffic

First 30 reviews in 6 weeks, not 19

Plush is bought on softness and safety, which a shopper can only judge through other people's reviews. This launch enrolled in Vine before day one and skipped the usual empty-page months.

The challenge

A plush toy cannot be evaluated in a photograph. The two questions that decide the purchase — how soft is it really, and is it safe for a small child to sleep with — are answered almost entirely by reviews, which a new listing does not have.

The brand's previous launch had proved the cost of that. It ran advertising into a zero-review page for four and a half months, converting at half the category rate and paying an 88% ACoS for the privilege, and by the time thirty reviews had accumulated the launch budget was gone and the product never reached page one. The instinct afterwards was to spend more on advertising, which is exactly the wrong lever: paid traffic into an unreviewed plush listing is a leaky bucket.

Our approach

We front-loaded credibility instead of traffic.

  • Vine enrollment before launch day, with units reserved so the reviews begin accumulating from the first week the listing is live.
  • Advertising held back for six weeks — deliberately spending nothing until the page could convert, rather than buying clicks for an empty listing.
  • Review-answerable content — close-up texture frames, wash instructions and safety certification shown, so Vine reviewers had specifics to confirm.
  • Budget released in stages, tied to review count rather than to the calendar.

Inside the ad account

Anonymized account view, rebuilt from the figures reported above: ad sales growing from $6k to $33k a month while ACoS falls from 88% to 43% across the 5-month engagement.

The results

Thirty reviews arrived in six weeks instead of nineteen, and the product reached $74k a month by month five — a level the previous launch never got near.

The saving is in what was not spent. Conversion in the first eight weeks was 9.6% against 5.2% on the last launch, so every advertising dollar bought nearly twice the sales, and launch ACoS was halved. Holding advertising for six weeks felt like losing time; it was the cheapest six weeks of the launch.

“Last time we spent four months paying for clicks onto a page with no reviews. This time we just waited six weeks and it cost nothing.”
