Making a gift set behave like a gift

Conversion 4.8% → 8.2%

The listing photographed the spices beautifully and never showed the box, offered no gift message, and shipped with a packing slip showing the price. The buyer is not the person who opens it.

The challenge

A gift set is the only product in the catalog whose buyer never uses it, and the listing had been built entirely for someone who would. It showed six jars arranged on a board, close-ups of the blends, and a paragraph about sourcing — everything a cook wants to know and nothing a gift-giver needs.

What a gift-giver needs is confidence about a moment they will not be present for: what the box looks like closed, whether it arrives looking like a present or like groceries, whether a message can be included, and whether it can be wrapped. The answers were, respectively, unknown, like groceries, no and no — none of the gift options had ever been switched on, and the set shipped in a plain outer with protective fill. Shoppers who arrived with gifting intent, which the search terms showed was most of them, left for a competitor whose listing answered those four questions in its first two images.

Our approach

We rebuilt the listing for the person holding the box, not the person cooking with it.

  • Gift options switched on end to end — gift message, gift receipt and gift wrap, none of which had been enabled on the ASIN.
  • Gift-ready outer packaging so the parcel opens onto a finished box rather than onto protective fill and a retail carton.
  • Imagery re-sequenced for the recipient's first impression — closed box, box opening, contents, then scale held in a hand — with the sourcing story moved to A+.
  • Delivery certainty stated plainly on the page, because a gift has a date and an unanswered question about arrival ends the sale.

Inside the ad account

Anonymized account view, rebuilt from the figures reported above: ad sales growing from $22k to $45k a month while ACoS falls from 38% to 23% across the 5-month engagement.

The results

Conversion rose from 4.8% to 8.2% and revenue more than doubled to $101k a month, on the same six blends at the same $54.

The clearest evidence that the diagnosis was right is the share of orders shipping to an address other than the buyer's: 12% before, 41% after. The set was always a gift; the listing simply had not been letting people buy it as one. Returns fell to 3%, mostly because presentation expectations and reality now match.

“Our photography was gorgeous and it was all of the jars out of the box. Nobody gives someone six loose jars.”
