Adult beginners pick a learning app first and a keyboard second. The brand's instruments worked with all of them and said so nowhere.

The challenge

The modern adult beginner does not take lessons. They download a learning app, play for two weeks on a phone screen, and then buy a keyboard that works with it — which makes the app, not the instrument, the first decision in the chain.

The brand's listings were written for a music-shop conversation: key action, polyphony, onboard voices. Nothing said whether the instrument connects to a tablet, what cable that takes, or whether the app will recognize it. Shoppers who could not confirm compatibility either bought a competitor who stated it or returned the keyboard when the connection turned out to need an adapter they did not own.

Our approach

We wrote the listing for the second decision rather than the first.

  • Compatibility stated plainly — MIDI over USB, and the exact cable it takes, named rather than implied.
  • Setup shown in three frames, because the shopper's real question is whether this will work tonight.
  • Search coverage for app-led intent, an entire vocabulary the category's listings ignore.
  • The cable included rather than sold separately, which removed the single most common cause of a return.

The results

Revenue grew 74% to $211k a month with no change to the instruments themselves, and the return rate more than halved.

Ranking keywords carrying app or MIDI intent went from 20 to 380. That is the growth in one line: the brand became visible in the searches its actual buyer runs. Conversion rose 50% because the page now answers the question those buyers arrive with instead of the one a music teacher would ask.
