Buying the moment somebody's old cable stops working

ACoS 39% → 20%

Cables are not bought, they are re-bought — usually in irritation, the day the last one fails. The brand was bidding on product terms and ignoring the language of the failure that creates the purchase.

The challenge

Nobody wakes up wanting a charging cable. The purchase is triggered by an event — the old one frays at the connector, it charges only at a certain angle, it stopped working overnight — and the shopper goes to Amazon annoyed, in a hurry, and unusually willing to buy the first credible option.

The brand's advertising did not reflect any of that. It spent almost its entire budget on the category head terms, where it competed against everyone at nearly two dollars a click for shoppers at every possible stage of intent. The searches describing the failure itself — the ones that only a person who needs a cable today ever types — were cheap, abundant and completely unclaimed.

Our approach

We targeted the trigger rather than the product.

  • A failure-language term set built from review text and search data: the specific phrases people use when their existing cable has broken.
  • Copy written to the moment — leading with durability at the exact point where cables fail, which is what this shopper is now shopping for.
  • Budget shifted out of head terms progressively, keeping only the positions that survived on their own economics.
  • Multi-length availability surfaced so the urgent buyer does not leave to compare, since the replacement purchase is decided in minutes.

The results

ACoS fell from 39% to 20% and revenue grew 81% — on a smaller share of spend going to the terms the whole category fights over.

The new term set converts at 14.6% against 8.1% on the head terms. The reason is obvious once stated: a person describing a broken cable has already decided to buy one. Blended cost per click more than halved, because failure-language searches carry almost no competition — they read like complaints rather than like commercial keywords, and most advertisers never look at them.

“Our best customer is someone whose cable died this morning. We were spending the entire budget talking to people who were just browsing.”
