The challenge

There is no agreed noun for this product. American shoppers mostly type “band”, British and Australian ones mostly type “strap”, a large group searches “bracelet” because that is what the jewelry-style versions are called, and a further group searches “loop” because that is the word the device maker used for one particular model.

The brand's entire catalog said “band”, in every title, bullet and backend field, across three marketplaces. The other three words were not synonyms Amazon would infer — they were separate search universes, roughly two thirds of the category's total volume, and the brand was absent from all of them. In the UK and Australia that meant the listings were written in the wrong dialect for the market they were selling into.

Our approach

We covered the category's whole vocabulary instead of one dialect of it.

  • Noun audit by marketplace — volume measured for each term in each country rather than assumed from the US pattern.
  • Primary noun set per marketplace, with UK and AU listings led by “strap” and the US catalog kept on “band”.
  • Secondary nouns placed deliberately — in bullets, backend fields and A+ text, so each listing indexes for all four without reading like keyword soup.
  • Campaign structure mirroring the vocabulary, since the four terms carry different competition, different intent and different cost per click.

The results

Addressable indexed search volume went from 410k to 1.39 million a month, and sessions grew 66%.

Revenue grew 92% in five months without a new product, a new image or a price change — the catalog simply became findable by shoppers who use a different word for the thing it sells. Blended cost per click fell 31% as well, because three of the four nouns are far less contested than the one every seller had standardized on.

“Half our market was searching in a word we had never once written down. That was the entire problem.”
